Photoshop in 60 Seconds: Beyoncé Photo Collage

Could your Instagram use a little glam?  In this video, I was inspired by Queen Bey’s Instagram to create a fun, fashion-forward photo collage. Learn how to use Layer Masks, Blending Options, and modern Geometric Backgrounds to create unique effects.

Watch the process unfold and get all the details you need in the process below. Check out more amazing patterns and graphics on Envato Elements.

How to Create a Fashion Photo Collage in Photoshop

Open a New Document in Photoshop at 1080 x 1080 pixels. This is the perfect square-based orientation for Instagram.

Now Copy and Paste your photo onto a New Layer. I’ll be using this Fashion Stock from Pixabay.

Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) to create a selection around your model, and then add a Layer Mask to hide the rest of the background.

Hold Control-J to Duplicate this layer, before adding a quick border to the original. Do this by Right-clicking the layer and going to Blending Options.

Add a quick Stroke with the following settings:

  • Color: Black
  • Blend Mode: Normal
  • Size: 18 px
  • Position: Inside
  • Opacity: 100%
Add the Photo and Border

Now refine the Layer Mask for the copied layer. Use a Hard Round Brush (100% Hardness/100% Opacity) to remove the entire background. Then Right-click and select Apply Layer Mask before resizing the image with the Free Transform Tool (Control-T) for a much larger fit.

For a shadow effect, Duplicate (Control-J) the copy again. Right-click the new copy and select Blending Options to create a solid Color Overlay with the following settings:

  • Color: Black
  • Blend Mode: Normal
Add the duplicate and shadow

Add the background! Copy and Paste a pattern that matches your outfit. I used this Geometric Tileable Background set from Envato Elements.

Finish with a cute accessory that matches the outfit. Here, I used the same methods as before to add this pair of Sunglasses to the collage. Desaturate the glasses first with Hue and Saturation, and then create a quick Duplicate set to Multiply for a darker effect.

Add more accessories

Now you’ve got a Beyoncé-worthy Instagram post!

Here’s the final result.
